What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI assistant you can talk to by typing messages. It can help you write emails, summarize documents, answer questions, create images, analyze spreadsheets, and much more. Think of it as a very capable helper that you access through a website or phone app.

It's one of the most popular AI tools available and a great place to start if you've never used AI before.

Before you start

You can start using ChatGPT right now — just visit chatgpt.com and create a free account. The free version is powerful enough for most everyday tasks.

If you want more features (faster responses, image creation, file analysis), the Plus plan costs $20/month.

Quickstart

  1. Visit chatgpt.com and sign in (or create a free account).
  2. Type a message describing what you need help with — be specific. Instead of "help me write," try "Write a professional email declining a meeting invitation, keeping a friendly tone."
  3. If the response isn't quite right, ask for revisions: "Make it shorter" or "Change the tone to be more casual."
  4. Try uploading a file (PDF, spreadsheet, image) and asking ChatGPT to analyze or summarize it.
  5. To create an image, just describe what you want: "Create an illustration of a mountain landscape at sunset."

Key features

  • Chat — Ask questions, get help writing, brainstorm ideas
  • File analysis — Upload PDFs, spreadsheets, or images and ask questions about them
  • Image creation — Describe an image and ChatGPT creates it using DALL-E
  • Voice — Talk to ChatGPT using your voice on the mobile app
  • Memory — ChatGPT remembers things you've told it across conversations
  • Custom GPTs — Create specialized helpers for repeated tasks (like a "Meeting Notes Writer" or "Email Drafter")

Best for

  • First AI tool for beginners — easy to start, broad capabilities
  • Writing, editing, and content creation
  • Document and spreadsheet analysis
  • Image creation and creative work
  • Building reusable AI assistants (Custom GPTs)

Quickstart

Before you begin

Access path
Visit chatgpt.com or download the ChatGPT app for your phone or computer. You can start for free — no payment required. Paid plans ($20/month for Plus) unlock faster responses, image creation, file analysis, and more.
Account requirement
Free account for basic chat. Plus ($20/month) adds image generation, Canvas, Advanced Data Analysis, and faster models. Pro ($200/month) gives unlimited access to the most powerful models.
First useful action
Start with a real task — not just 'Hello.' Upload a document to summarize, describe an email to write, or ask for help planning a project. The more specific you are, the better the results.

Simple mode quickstart

  1. Visit chatgpt.com and sign in (or create a free account).
  2. Type what you need help with — be specific. Instead of 'help me write,' try 'Write a professional email declining a meeting invitation.'
  3. If the answer isn't right, ask for changes: 'Make it shorter' or 'Use a friendlier tone.' Don't start over — iterate.
  4. Try uploading a file (PDF, spreadsheet, image) and ask ChatGPT to summarize or analyze it.

Basic tutorials

Summarize a document

Simple mode

  1. Upload a document by clicking the attachment icon (PDF, Word, spreadsheet, or image all work).
  2. Ask: 'Summarize the key points from this document in 5 bullet points.'
  3. Ask for a second version: 'Rewrite this for someone who isn't technical.'

Expected output: You move from reading to decision-making faster.

Next step: Ask ChatGPT to draft the follow-up email, memo, or action plan.

Create an image

Simple mode

  1. Describe what you want to see: 'A cozy coffee shop on a rainy day, watercolor style.'
  2. Be specific about subject, setting, style, colors, and mood for better results.
  3. Ask for changes: 'Make the sky more dramatic' or 'Add a cat in the window.'

Expected output: You get custom visuals without design software.

Next step: Build a Custom GPT with your brand style guide for consistent image generation.

Best for

  • First AI tool for beginners — easiest starting point
  • Writing, editing, and content creation
  • Document and spreadsheet analysis
  • Image creation with DALL-E / GPT-4o
  • Custom assistants via Custom GPTs
  • Data analysis with Code Interpreter

When to choose an alternative

  • You need source-backed research with citations — try Perplexity.
  • You want a desktop assistant with MCP integrations — try Claude Desktop.
  • You need coding help in a terminal — try Claude Code or Cursor.

EdgeTeam take

Still the default recommendation for people new to AI. The ecosystem (Custom GPTs, plugins, image gen, code interpreter) is unmatched in breadth. But breadth comes at the cost of depth — for serious research, Perplexity is better; for serious writing, Claude is better. ChatGPT is the Swiss Army knife: good at everything, best at nothing.
